“We all want quiet. We all want beauty… we all need space. Unless we have it, we cannot reach that sense of quiet in which whispers of better things come to us gently.”

These are the words of our founder, Octavia Hill, co-founder of the National Trust and one of the first campaigners for the clear air act.

At Octavia, we believe that we have a social obligation and a moral duty to create spaces that people can thrive in, but that future generations can also enjoy. In other words, we aim to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs; managing our resources and not using them at a faster rate than the earth can replenish them.

To reflect our mission to provide homes, care and support “for the common good”, we are consulting on a new environmental strategy in response to the burgeoning environmental crisis. The strategy will build on our existing document, outlining our ambition for achieving net-zero carbon, as well as our plans to address wider environmental impacts such as water consumption, waste, pollution and biodiversity.

We are inviting residents to contribute to our strategy through a sustainability event on April 30 from 10am-4pm at the Reed Centre in North Kensington. Attendees will be given the opportunity to listen to guest speakers and participate in workshops on key sustainability topics. Lunch and refreshments will be provided, alongside some free energy saving devices and goodies. The output from the day will be a ‘Resident Action plan’ which will inform our new strategy that will be published shortly afterwards.

If you are an Octavia resident and would like to be part of the change, please RSVP to billy.cliffen@octavia.org.uk.
