Moving home
If your home has become too big or too small for you, or you need a different kind of home, you may wish to move somewhere new.
We will do what we can to help, but, unfortunately, opportunities for moving are limited. In particular, family-sized homes for affordable rent are in short supply and there is very little movement in London. Our work with our local authority partners also means that between 50% and 75% of our empty homes have to be offered to people put forward by the local council.
However, there are steps you can take to maximise your chances of a move.
Firstly, you should consider widening your preferences. If you opt only for ground floor properties or homes with gardens, which are both in high demand, you are less likely to be offered a home. The same is true if you limit yourself to only one or two areas. As far as possible, you should be willing to be flexible.
Secondly, you should find out about your wider housing options. We can only offer a limited number of transfers each year and even people with an urgent need to move sometimes wait a long time. But a transfer isn’t your only option. For information about such options please view the Looking for a home section of this website.
If you are successful in moving homes you may qualify for a £150 cash incentive for leaving your home in a good condition. For more information on how to claim this incentive see the Moving Homes Incentive leaflet in the Publications section.
