Citizenship and Brexit
How will Octavia EU residents be affected after brexit?
Once the UK leaves the EU, its participation in the freedom of movement for EU members will end. Anyone who is a citizen of an EU country currently living in the UK and who wants to carry on living legally in the UK, will need to apply to the scheme by 30 June 2021. This applies even if the EU citizen is married to someone British; adults will need to apply on behalf of children, as they need to apply too.
If the application is successful:
- Pre-settled status - will be granted if the applicant has not lived in the UK for five 5 years; this will allow them to stay in the UK and work towards the five year requirement, after which they can apply for settled status
- Settled status - will be granted to EU citizens who have lived in the UK for five years by the end of 2020 (exceptions apply)
If you are claiming benefits and you do not apply for EU Settlement Scheme by 30 June 2021, your benefits may end.
There is no fee to apply and the process is already taking longer due to COVID-19.
Do not delay, make your application now.
