The Butterfly project provides regular, structured literacy classes for local children aged between 5-12 years, every Saturday morning.
The Octavia Foundation has provided bursaries for up to twenty children of Octavia tenants to attend these classes from September – December 2007.
Research carried out in the Harrow Road ward, an area that is covered by this project, indicates that only 14% of African Caribbean boys achieve five grade A-C’s in GCSE exams. Furthermore, overcrowding is a big issue for families living in this borough.
By providing literacy support to local children through the Butterfly project, we hope to raise the educational attainment of local children, particularly those who are living in overcrowded homes where it may be difficult to do homework.
At the end of the first term, Real Action will be able to continue to provide places for those children that wish to continue at minimal cost.
