What is Extra Care and information about some of our special projects
Extra care housing offers independent living to older people as an alternative to residential care homes.
Our extra care housing schemes provide a non-institutional structure, which is warm and homely. We respect the individuality, dignity and right to privacy of each tenant. We seek to help each tenant fulfill their highest potential - physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Extra care housing is different because:
Miranda House is an innovative extra care sheltered housing project providing 20 one-bedroom self-contained flats, the first such scheme in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea. We provide a flexible 24-hour on-site support service that enables elderly and disabled tenants suffering with dementia or mental health problems to enjoy the freedom of independent living and yet with support on
"Its absolutely lovely and well thought out and convenient in every way. You can live your own life." Mrs Headley, tenant.
A philosophy of choice for individuals is central to the way Miranda House is managed. All tenants have their own social workers from the Borough and personal care plans which are designed to meet their individual needs and to change when those needs change.
Individual care including assisted bathing and a domiciliary care service is available at a time convenient to the tenant and their preferred way of life. In the same way, tenants are able to choose whether or not to participate in social activities like dance classes and video film evenings.
James Hill House opened in October 2006 in North Kensington. The building has 28 self-contained flats, including two flats for couples and three for guests, plus a large garden area. All flats overlook either the Grand Union Canal on one side or Horniman Pleasant park on the other.
The scheme is close to local shops and public transport. There are 4 floors with a lift to each floor and each floor has differently colour coded walls and carpets to assist tenants who have short-term memory loss. All flats and communal areas are fully accessible to wheelchair owners. There is a large communal lounge available for social activities, organised by or for our tenants and a kitchen with direct access to the garden.
