Environment

Octavia Housing’s green ethos is inspired by the work of our Victorian founder, Octavia Hill. Besides her influential work in social housing, she had strong views about the environment and was instrumental in preserving many of the open spaces that so many of us enjoy today. Octavia's achievements include co-founding the National Trust, inventing the concept of the Green Belt (linking open spaces for Londoners) and campaigning for clean air, which laid the foundations for the 1956 clean air act to mention a few.

Over 100 years on, Hill’s environmental principals continue to influence our work as we aim to reduce our environmental impact in all areas, including:

  • Strategy and management
  • Office practices
  • Existing buildings; and
  • New buildings.

Read our environmental strategy to find out more about our plans for 2010-2013.

As part of our strategy, we were awarded funding from the Technology Strategy Board's Retrofit for the future programme to conduct an eco experiment - transforming a Victorian terraced property in a conservation area into an exemplar low energy home. Find out more about the exciting Princedale Project at our dedicated microsite.
