Information on how to make a job application for an advertised post

Making an application

Unless otherwise stated, It is essential that you complete the Application Form as fully, carefully and accurately as possible.

The following suggestions are made to help you complete your application.

Make sure that you have first read the Job Description (the main duties of the post) and the Person Specification (the qualities you need to carry out the post).

The section headed “why are you interested in applying for this post” is your main opportunity to demonstrate why we should shortlist you. You should state how you meet each of the criteria outlined in the Person Specification, where possible giving examples. Consider not only your work experience, but also any other experience you may have gained which is relevant, for example, voluntary work or organising family activities.

Direct your application towards the specific post. If you require further space, only attach up to two additional sheets. Make sure that you have given your full career history in date order and have not left any unexplained gaps.

Please note that where these gaps are within the last two years, we will need the name and address of the person who can confirm your activities during the gap, e.g. Benefits Office. Finally, please make sure we receive the form by the closing date, as late applications will not normally be considered.

Shortlisting is based on the skills and experience that you put on your Application Form. The applicants whose skills, knowledge and experience most closely meet the Person Specification are called for an interview. If you are shortlisted for interview you will be contacted in writing or by telephone.

Octavia tries hard to ensure that every stage of the recruitment process is fair. We have a duty to ensure that everyone is treated without discrimination and hope that you feel that this is the case even if you have not been appointed.

For certain posts we will require a criminal record check from the Criminal Records Bureau before any appointment is confirmed.
